I'm happy to have Misa Buckley with us today. I met Misa on twitter this year and have had a great time with her! She is always willing to chat and have fun, so when she told me she had a new book I was excited to be part of showing it off!

Never Say Never

I have to admit that I disliked vampires. I never liked Angel, True Blood doesn’t interest me and I’d still rather gouge my eyes out than read Twilight. The only problem being is that vampires, courtesy of said sparkly tween fiction, are terribly popular at the moment. Everyone is writing vampires. Well, not me. Nuh uh. I wasn’t going to bend to the trend, jump on the bandwagon. Not me. I was never going to write vampires.

When you’re a writer never say never.
Because the thing is, inspiration can come from anywhere and often when it’s least expected. For me, the turning point came whilst watching Sanctuary. The characters off to rescue self-proclaimed “vampire genius” Nikola Tesla (yes, that one – it’s complicated), have this conversation:

“Whatever happened to the good old stake through the heart?”

“Doesn't work.”

“What about all those movies like Buffy?”

“Misinformation propaganda spread by the vampires themselves – confuse the enemy, preserve the race.”

“What about exposing them to sunlight or garlic?”

“All you get is tanned vampires with bad breath.”

The idea of vampires creating their own mythology appealed to me. Of course, simply transferring it to fiction would be cheating and an infringement of copyright. As I’m not that sort of person, I had to think about how I could springboard off the idea and make my own world.

Eleanor’s Heart is set in Victorian Britain, with the setting divided between Chester (unnamed) and Stonehenge. The central character – Eleanor – is a poor young woman eking out an existence on the streets. As I needed a reason for this, I did some research into illnesses of the blood. Well, I was writing vampires! But her illness had to be a driving force, not just in terms of an inciting incident, but to carry her through the entire story.

With my heroine established, I needed a hero. Enter Jefferson Park, one of the last Vampires that inhabit my world. He comes from a race that’s an offshoot of Homo Sapiens, going back thousands of years. A race that is intelligent and had made huge leaps in technology before a cousin race – the Sanguisuge – began to flourish. It’s this sub-species that the legends spring from, but the original vampires are tainted by association and hunted to near extinction.

Like the vampires of Sanctuary, he can go out in the sun (though he doesn’t sparkle) and is impervious to traditional weapons. He’s not immortal – just very long lived – and he can be killed if one knows how. In deference to the vampire that made me love vampires again, he is intelligent, stylist and more than a little arrogant.

Having created an alternative world and a mythology, I needed a fix and that came in the form of a magical gem. Since I had vampires, I decided on a ruby for it’s blood colour, which also led me to its name – the Heart of Ishra – and that gave me the rest of the plot.

And that is? Oh, I can’t tell you that now, can I? No, you’ll just have to read the book.

Eleanor's Heart

ELEANOR’S HEART

Dying of a rare blood disease, Eleanor Franklin needs laudanum to ease the pain, often driven to steal in order to buy more. But when she steals a ruby she has no idea that the gem will tip her into the midst of a deadly species war.
Saved by Jefferson Park, she discovers a man with an even darker past than her own: he is one of the last true Vampires fighting to stop the eradication of his kind.
But the Sanguine aren’t the only problem as Eleanor finds herself falling in love with Jefferson. It is a relationship she cannot commit to, as she knows her time is limited, and she will not risk breaking his heart.

Abby Hayes talks to us about SEX...

How much does timing, place, etc have an impact on a sexual scene? Well just the same as it has in real life. Thing is, in a story, hmmm, one may be able to get away with a lot more. Just imagine…I do all the time *winks* One thing I love about writing is all the sources of inspiration too. The thing that always seems to get my creative juices flowing, and not always when the timing is right for me to write, is seeing the calls for anthologies that my publisher posts. Naughty Nights Press’s owner, Gina Kincade, has come up with some really great themes for their anthologies, and I swear, if I had the time, I would write a story or two for them all. So far though, let’s look at the themes, settings and plots I’ve come up with that are out there now in sexy NNP anthologies, and a hint at what is to come…

Sex In A Public Place – After Hours!

I’m going to start with the hottest. For The Boys Club Anthology, I wrote a story called, “Getting Fit” It takes place in a gym where once a month the guy that owns the gym, Daren, gets together with his lover Mike, and their two sets of couple friends: Ryan and John along with Steve and Jake. From midnight on, the gym is open to these six men to get all sweaty together wherever and however they want. With pool and Jacuzzi, racquetball courts and yoga equipment, after hours, these guys work each other out in ways far from appropriate during normal business hours…

Sex In A Public Place – A Restaurant Kitchen – During Business Hours!

Spontaneous Liaisons
I love the idea of making your lover the main course, or well serving dish. In the Spontaneous Liaisons Anthology, I wrote a story called “Fast Food on Campus.” In this one, I have friends, working together on campus, come together, finally, hot and fast, several times, after confessing their feelings about each other. And, yes, all of this starts in the back of a fast food place on campus. Again, its fiction, so sanitary, legal, yeah…yeah… It was a slow day, big storm and all that kept the usual rush of customers home.  A quickie on the freezer at work, groping during the car ride home, just inside the front door of his place, are just a few of the sexy yet quick encounters Devin and Amanda have though…

Sex In An Apartment – BUT With College Prof AND His Assistant!
Campus Sexploits
Yes, I know, sex in an apartment, in a bed, pretty typical, even if with someone new. But, I like to mix things up, and will never tell who the inspiration for this story was LOL :) In “Chem 101” in the Campus Sexploits anthology, when Sara is caught almost kissing the professor’s assistant after chemistry lab, the professor makes them both a proposition they can’t pass up. It sounds like a typical ménage encounter, and she is more than willing to be taught. Yet, soon her and the assistant find that the professor likes to give directions, in and out of class, pushing his students in little ways, more than they imagined he ever would. *sighs* Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Another with M/F/M hotness!

Sex In A Hotel Room – BUT With Your Boss, Two Other Guys You Work With, AND A Ghost!

In “Haunted Party” in the Wicked & Wanton All Hallows Eve anthology, Alexa goes to her first ever Halloween Bash that is thrown each year by her new boss, a sexy skeptic who every guy wants to be his friend and every woman wants to screw. But, she is more professional than that. Or so she thinks. One poltergeist and one strange revelation later though, locked in a room with her boss and two male co-workers, fear turns to competition just like it always does in the board room. Alexa, Derrick, Ken and James, with battle wounds and all, fight for their lives in the most sexy way ever conceived. Once their hot and sexy games begin, this bitch of a ghost may never know what hit her….
But, that is only what is out right now. I also have a story, “Camping Out with Old Friends” coming out in an anthology this summer that takes place in a tent on a camping trip with old high school friends. And, my first F/F/F story called, “The Lake House” where again, three old high school friends meet up to talk over old times, but skinny dipping in the dark suggests other possible, fun and new activities. So, look out for more sexy anthologies from NNP. And, below, check out the links for the ones already out.

By day, Abby is what the world tells her to be. By night, alone with her imagination, she is who she wants to be. Giving into the breathy voices who pant new and exciting sexual scenarios inside of her head, she pounds away at her keyboard. Abby’s only goal is to have her readers free their own minds, grab their ereaders, and go away with her into a world where no one judges what the body wants, instead they explore what the flesh is capable of.
