Conner packed up the last of his stuff and threw it into the duffel bag. The first event of the new season was starting in a few days and he was flying out to New York City later tonight. He was looking forward to meeting up with his best friend Brady Parrish. His mind flashed back to the previous evening at Decadence. He wished he could tell Brady about the BDSM lifestyle he wanted. Brady was a great guy and wouldn’t judge him, so maybe he would some day, but how do you bring something like that up?

He couldn’t tell anyone on the tour about his lifestyle preferences. The NBT wasn’t exactly the most liberal-minded sport around. It was bad enough evidently many of the riders had been aware he and Brady sometimes shared women—he didn’t need word of this getting out. It could ruin his career. The NBT was all about family and hardworking values, not Doms and whips and spreader bars.

His cell phone rang, jolting him back to the present. “Yeah?”

“Yeah? Nice greeting,” Brady replied.

“Sorry,” Conner answered. “My mind was a million miles away. What’s up, dude?”

“Just wanted to find out what time you’re getting in tomorrow. I’ve got a rental, so I can swing by and pick you up.”

“You don’t have to do that. I was gonna take a cab.”

“Not necessary. Besides, then you can buy me dinner. What time does your flight get in?”

“Hold on.” He rummaged through his stuff until he produced his ticket. “Nine fifteen. US Air, Kennedy.”

“Cool. See you then.”

Jessica loaded her computer into her messenger bag and headed out onto the event floor. She still had four stock contractors to find before she could relax and watch the competition. Her co-liaison had said the first event was always crazy and this one was certainly living up to its hype. Between the new contractors, new bulls, and the new her—well, not exactly new, but new to this “first event” stuff, she was about to blow a gasket.

Jessica had known when she’d taken the position she might encounter some old-fashioned attitudes regarding her ability to do her job, but she was still astounded at how often it happened. She knew bulls—her daddy was a cattle rancher. She knew all about the different breeds, and why one breed was preferred for one job over another. She understood which made a good bull-riding bull, and how to pick one in a draft based on what you needed to get out of the ride. But it didn’t matter. Some of these assholes saw her big boobs and figured she was here as eye candy.

Spotting Jack Tucker, she hurried after him. “Mr. Tucker,” she called. She was gaining on him but he appeared to be ignoring her. “Mr. Tucker. I’m Jessica, the liaison from the NBT. We met last season? I need to go over a couple of things with you.” She’d just caught up with him by this time and she glanced over to see if he was listening at all.

“I turned in my paperwork,” he replied as he kept walking. “Now get outta my way, girlie. I’ve got stuff to do.” He spit a stream of tobacco right in front of her and Jessica had to consciously try not to flinch. It wasn’t the first time she’d seen tobacco being spit, but to know he’d purposely done it right where she’d be walking—ick. He’d done a similar thing last year and was obviously trying to intimidate her, but was barking up the wrong tree if he thought she was going to slink away like some chastised dog.

“Mr. Tucker,” she began, trying to keep her voice down and even. “You left a few pieces of your paperwork blank and I need to have those parts filled in.”

“I’ve been doin’ paperwork for the tour for longer ’n you’ve been alive, girlie,” he said. “I’ve never had a problem.”

Jessica took a deep breath and tried again. “We’re putting the bulls into a database. Without information like year of birth, weight, etcetera, our database will be incomplete. If you just take a few moments of your time to look at your records I’ll leave you alone.”

He stopped and turned to her. “This tour’s gettin’ to be more of a pain in the ass every year.” He stabbed a finger in her general direction. “People like you comin’ in and tryin’ to change everything. Modernize, you say. Well, I say if the system ain’t broke, don’t fuck with it.” Jessica decided she’d had enough after she saw his pompous expression.

“Mr. Tucker, you have one hour to have this information to my colleague, Rick O’Meara, in the Official’s Room. If you don’t, I will disqualify your bulls.” Spinning on her heel, she began to walk away, forcing herself not to run. Before she got ten feet, though, a rough hand gripped her arm.

“What did you say, you little bitch?” He squeezed and she gasped from the pain.

Before she could process anything further Conner was there, prying the man’s fingers off her arm. “Get your fuckin’ hands off her.”

She looked up at him. His lips were set in a thin line and his eyes were as dark and stormy as one of the Texas tornadoes she’d seen dozens of times living on the Panhandle.

Tucker released her. “I’d suggest you go find the information the lady requested,” Conner growled, getting in the other man’s personal space. Since Conner had a good eight inches and at least seventy pounds on the man, he backed down immediately.

“This isn’t over,” he told her, then turned and stalked away.

Conner lifted her arm. “He hurt you.” It wasn’t a question.

“It’s not a big deal,” she answered. A profound sense of gratitude swept through her body and as she stared up at his eyes, which had darkened even further as he looked back at her, she felt as if she could drown in them. Normally she’d prefer to fight her own battles, but she didn’t know what Tucker would have done to her if Conner hadn’t intervened. She shivered.

Her skin felt searing hot where his fingers touched it, and whether from the leftover adrenaline of the situation or from her reaction to him she didn’t know, but her breath was coming fast and furious, making her look like a panting fool. His gaze flickered down to her breasts and then slowly returned to her face.

“I saw the whole thing. You have to report him. He can’t be treating you like that. You were just doing your job and he wasn’t doing his.”

She was mortified he’d witnessed such an embarrassing situation. Jessica was afraid he would go tell the tour she couldn’t handle herself and she’d be out of a job. Even with all the crap she had to take, she loved this job. If she could’ve been a bull rider she would’ve, but she’d been cursed with the wrong DNA, so she did what she could to be close to the sport. She looked down, sighing. “Don’t worry about it,” she mumbled, dropping her eyes.

He grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him again. Her pussy heated as she remembered how he’d done the same thing to his sub that night at Decadence. “I am worried about it, and you’re not gonna waylay me.”

“I came on board around the middle of last season when Steven had his heart attack.”

Conner nodded. “Steven worked too hard. It looks like you do too.” He studied her face and then his eyes narrowed. “Do you have the power to disqualify his bulls?”

“No, but if I told the officials to they would.”

“Just like that, without an explanation?”

“Of course not, but if I told them he withheld information I requested they would disqualify him. They’re cracking down on that stuff this season.”

“So you were ready to make an example outta him?”

Jessica shrugged. “I did what I had to do.” And now what she needed to do was get away from Conner Raub. “Anyway, I still need to find three other contractors. Thank you for coming to my rescue. I hope we can keep this between us—I don’t want people thinking I can’t handle myself around here.”

Conner’s jaw tightened. “I don’t like the idea of him getting away with mauling you.” He stepped closer and Jessica felt her nipples tighten against the lacy confines of her bra. Thankfully she needed a sturdy bra to give her large breasts the support they needed, so her arousal didn’t show. That would’ve been more than she could’ve handled. Conner felt as if he’d been kicked in the chest by an ornery bull. He’d been walking back to the riders’ prep area after registering when he’d come upon Jessica and that guy. When she’d said she’d disqualify the asshole’s bulls he’d silently cheered, loving the way she’d stood up to him. He wanted a submissive in the bedroom, but a girl with spunk outside it was so much more entertaining.

But the guy had gone and grabbed her and Conner had seen red. After he’d sent the guy packing Jessica had looked up at him like some kind of hero and his dick had instantly gone rock hard. Rubbing his face, he continued toward the prep area. When he arrived, Brady was already there. “Dude, you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Fine,” Conner answered. He placed his gear bag on the table in front of him and began to pull out everything to inspect it.

“Nervous?”

“Yeah.” He figured that was the easiest explanation he could give for why he looked shaken up. He sure as hell felt shaken up, but he needed to get his head in the game fast or this event would be all over for him.

Brady left him alone while they finished their prep work. Then they took their stuff up to the area behind the chutes and settled in to watch. When Brady’s turn rolled around, Conner provided his usual assistance getting him situated on his bull and helping him loop his bull rope underneath the bull’s massive girth and bring it up the other side. He was pushing the bull away from the near fence when he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He ignored the feeling for the moment and concentrated on his friend. When Brady nodded he let go and Brady and the bull went careening out of the chute.

Brady held on for the full eight seconds and then scrambled off the back of the still-bucking bull, landing on his shoulder and rolling left, away from the pounding hooves. He sprang up and ran toward the rail. Conner reached his hand out and grabbed Brady’s biceps, ready to pull him over if need be. The bull fighters got the beast corralled, though, and both he and Brady directed their attention to the scoreboard.

“Ladies and gentlemen, that was last year’s winner, Brady Parrish, the King of Rodeo, ridin’ Extremist.” There was a pause. “Looks like Brady’s picking up where he left off last year. He scores an 89.5. That puts Brady in first place with five riders remaining.”

“Good for you,” Conner said, clapping his best friend on the back. “But I’m gonna beat your ass.” Finally he allowed himself to turn around. Standing not thirty feet from him, looking at him as if he were a dessert buffet and she was a starving chocoholic, was Jessica. She licked her lips and Conner barely stifled a groan. His dick took notice and he ruthlessly forced it back down. Riding with a hard-on was a bad idea for a whole bunch of reasons, not the least of which was the riders didn’t wear cups and getting bounced around on a bull while sporting a boner was bound to be a very unpleasant experience. He allowed himself to stare her down for a moment before touching the brim of his hat in a silent salute and turning back to the chutes.

When it was his turn to ride he was thankfully able to focus and stayed on for the full eight seconds, scoring a 90 and taking over first place. After completing his turn and picking up his bull rope from one of the bull fighters, he climbed over the rail. Now his ride was done, and he wanted to see Jessica’s arm. He had a feeling there would be a clear handprint visible on her pale skin. While that thought would have turned him on if it was his handprint on her ass and she was a willing participant, it made him want to kill if that bastard had hurt her. How often did she get manhandled? He intended to get some answers.

Looking around, though, he didn’t see her. Accepting congratulations from his fellow riders, he continued to scan the area around him. Where had she gone off to? Now he was pissed. She knew he wanted a look at her arm. Was she avoiding him? After the look she’d given him a few minutes ago, that possibility seemed unlikely, but maybe she’d run like a scared jackrabbit. Wouldn’t be the first time he’d scared off a woman when they got a peek at his dominant side. Maybe it was for the best. He damn well shouldn’t be opening that can of worms while he was on tour. But man, she made him want to.

Jessica hid behind a sponsor sign, her back pressed to the cool plastic. What was she doing? She knew Conner wanted to see her arm and instinctively he wouldn’t rest until he’d tracked her down, and yet here she was, hiding from him. Isn’t this what she wanted—him coming to her on his own? She wiped her damp palms on her jeans and raised her eyes to the roof of the arena. Was she strong enough to do this? Was she strong enough to go after what she wanted?

She knew the draft would be starting soon and she had no choice but to face him then. She had to be there to note which bulls got drawn so she could deal with the contractors tomorrow. Grabbing her bag, she peeked out from behind the sign and then darted into the corridor.

“Thought you could avoid me?” A silky Texas drawl wound its way around her ear and she jumped.

“C-Conner,” she whispered. Clearing her throat, she continued. “I was going to the draft area.”

“Me too. I’ll walk with you.” He fell into line with her, making his long-legged stride shorter to match hers. “How’s your arm?”

“Fine, truly. Thank you for asking.” She bit her lip and looked away.

“Don’t do that.”

Her head whipped around. “Do what?”

“Bite your lip. It gives a man ideas.”

“Ideas?” God, she was turning into a parroting idiot…

“Yeah, ideas. Ideas me and any other warm-blooded man around here would have after lookin’ at your mouth. I don’t like it.” He glanced at her. “Dammit! You’re still doing it.”

She did, and the thought only excited her more. Her sex clenched hard and she gasped at the onslaught of sensation.

He stopped and looked down at her. His eyes blazed with lust and something else—anger? Was he angry with her? And if so, why?

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I’ve never,” he paused and took another breath, “ever met a woman like you, Jessica. I hardly know you but you make my blood boil.” He closed his eyes for a second, and when he opened them they had cleared. Her brow lowered in confusion. “But as much as I’d like to act on the attraction I feel for you, I can’t. I won’t. You work for the tour. I can’t get involved with someone who’s employed by the tour. If it went south my career could be ruined and I can’t abide that. Have a good night.” He turned and continued down the hall, his long legs creating distance between them quickly. What had just happened?

Jessica finished her work for the night and called her neighbor Viola to check on her apartment. Viola was watching it for her while she was on tour. Jessica’s daddy had pitched a fit when she’d decided to hold on to the place, saying it was stupid for her to spend money on an apartment she wasn’t even at eight months out of the year, but Jessica treasured her independence and had dug in her heels.

“Hello?”

“Viola? You sound tired. Did I wake you?” Viola wasn’t old by any stretch of the imagination, but Jessica still felt a little guilty having her bringing in her mail and watering her plants for weeks at a time between the periods Jessica could be at home.

“No, I was just absorbed in my reading.”

Jessica smiled. Viola went through murder mysteries like most people went through oxygen. “All right then. How are things?”

“Oh, fine. But my life is boring, you know that. Tell me what’s going on in yours. Did you talk to that boy yet?”

Jessica had told Viola about Conner during her last visit with the woman before leaving for New York City. She’d been bursting at the seams wanting to talk about him, and since most of her friends from high school or community college were wrapped up in their own lives she hardly talked to them anymore. Of course, she didn’t tell Viola where she’d met him—she wasn’t ready to discuss her sexual proclivities with anybody, least of all her older friend.

“Yes, actually, I did. But it didn’t go quite like I expected.”

“What do you mean?”

Jessica winced as she recalled Conner’s face. “He happened along when I was trying to deal with an ornery subcontractor. They’re the guys from each farm who handle the bulls. Anyway, this guy is a real jerk. He wasn’t cooperating with me—giving me the information I need, so I threatened to disqualify his bulls. Well, he didn’t like that idea at all and grabbed my arm.”

“He did what?”

“It wasn’t that big a deal. Things like that happen sometimes.”

“Did you report him?”

“No. If I reported every guy who said or did something offensive I’d be reporting half the contractors on tour. It’s just part of life here.” She could feel Viola’s disapproval through the phone line, so she plowed ahead. “Anyway, Conner made me show him my arm. He got this look in his eye and I thought maybe he’d ask me out, but then he turned tail and ran. I don’t know what to think now. He seemed almost… I don’t know, angry or something.”

“That I can’t help you with. I never know what men are thinking. If I did maybe I’d be married right now.” Jessica made a dismissive noise and Voila laughed.

“Those men don’t know what they’re missing.”

“So what’re you gonna do now?”

“I don’t know. I guess wait and see how he reacts the next time I see him.”

“Probably as good a plan as any.”

“Listen, I should go. It’s late and I’m tired. The first event is always kind of crazy with everybody getting used to new rules, new staff…”

Cassandra: Thanks for all turning out. I understand your scheduling difficulties with Lawrence only being able to go out at night, and all. Before we get started, Lawrence, you did feed tonight, right? Not hungry at all.

Lawrence: While you smell quite delectable Ms. Cassandra, and I do appreciate the ah creative talents portrayed in your books, you can be rest assured that I’m quite satisfied at the moment.

Cassandra: Are you saying that you’ve read my books?

Lawrence: Well, of course we have. I wouldn’t sit down in an interview with someone without knowing something about them. From your latest release, Impact, I see you have a little something going on for bull riders, eh?

Lily: Lawrence, leave her alone already. She’s here to do the asking. We’re here to answer.

Lawrence: Very well. I shall be quiet unless asked a question.

Cassandra: All right, then. Trevor, would you like to sit down and join us? It’s kind of hard to talk with you pacing the room like that. Is something wrong?

Trevor: I’m just not that sure about all of this. Letting people more into our lives. Already it seems like we get more tourists coming to our bookstore Pages in New Orleans. Oh, sure, Louisa didn’t use the “real” name, but people will eventually figure it out. Look at the werewolf. It’s like I’m on display.

Cassandra: While we’re on that subject, what do you think of Louisa sharing so much of your personal life together? I mean, some of those sex scenes get pretty explicit.

Lawrence leans forward and rubs his thumb over Cassandra’s hand, trailing from the wrist upward. Ma cherie, do you enjoy them? Reading our most private moments together.

Trevor: If others want to virtually step into our bedroom, more power to them. Hopefully, it’ll help someone else’s relationship, or get them to understand how others are different from them. What I don’t get, though, is people judging us. Oh, Louisa reads the book reviews so we get the feedback. One reviewer called me a sub. Said I wasn’t alpha enough, and Lawrence cares too much about helping others.

It’s ridiculous. I can promise her that I can be as alpha as she needs. What happens in our bedroom is between us.

Lily: What bothers Trevor the most is the labels. We’re more than just a vampire, a witch & a werewolf. Others may not understand how our relationship works, but it does. It’s like we all fit together somehow. Oh, and I don’t just mean physically!

Cassandra: Do you share any character traits with Louisa?

Lily (looks at the other two): Well, I read runes, and that’s something that Louisa has done since she was a teen. I think a lot of my paranormal abilities may mirror experiences that Louisa has had, but I try not to delve to deep into her mind. Later this year at the Authors After Dark conference in New Orleans, she’ll hold a late-night session, and I’m sure she’ll be channeling me at that point.

Do you have a question you’d like to ask the runes, Cassandra? I’ll see what’s in store. Nothing yes or no …

Will I be a bestselling author?

Lily: With a hand inside of the velvet bag, I pulled out Dagaz. Here’s a bit of meaning: “In each life comes at least one moment which, if recognized and seized, transforms the course of that life forever. Cassandra: What do you have planned for the future? Anything that Louisa’s working on that you might be able to share?

Lawrence: I’ve asked Lily to marry us, so we’re looking into the logistics of how to work that out. And we also have this little one on the way.

Lily: Already my hormones are a little bit out of whack, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep my powers in check. I’m learning though.

Trevor: Louisa also will catch up with my sister, Silver, and her boyfriend Nick. Nick underwent some drastic changes recently … I wouldn’t want to give too much away if someone hasn’t read Chains of Silver. But let’s just say that they have some adjusting to do as a young couple.

Cassandra: Thanks so much again, for visiting with me, and opening up about your lives. I look forward to reading more.

Here, on this wonderful daydreaming blog, I feel very comfortable. So much so that it’s easy to imagine slipping under the covers with one of the gorgeous males pictured so temptingly. But, hey, I want to tell you about my latest heroine, Adelaide Beauchamp, whose story I tell in my new novel, Orchid Pink. And while I’m doing so, I’d like to include bits about today’s culture.

You might wonder what I mean, given that Adelaide’s a product of the Victorian era. That’s the background and I’ve enjoyed exploring that time and recreating some of its aspects – pleasant and unpleasant. A woman’s lot was often not a very happy one and often females were stereotyped as drudges, domestic angels or whores. Where does my heroine fit in that list?

Adelaide is a bit of hybrid. She admits this to us as she relates her story in the first person. She has a mind of her own and enjoys a pretty comfortable lifestyle. It’s when she reveals her passionate nature to us that we really learn what makes her tick. Her story is, dare I say it, seen through the prism of her sexuality. She’s certainly not as prim as she appears to be, dressed in a fashionable gown and sitting down to dinner with her father. Her mother’s absence plays a significant part in the way Adelaide views life.

There’s a collection of hothouse plants, in particular an orchid collection that’s an obsession with this heroine. Let’s open the door to that steamy glasshouse so you can share the experience.

Daisy’s attention centred clearly upon the sumptuous blooms. She peered, she sniffed; she uttered appreciative cooings as the colourful palette opened up, preening before her. I wanted her to like my collection yet felt a pang of jealousy. How insecure I was, in my need for this girl to find me beautiful. Hadn’t she, just the evening before, likened my hair to flames in the candlelight?

‘I’ve never seen nothing so perfect,’ she said at last, her voice reverential.

‘I have,’ I said. My orchids were calling me, urging me to tell her about their irresistible allure. ‘These bad girls are cunning, Daisy. When it comes to procreation, they are no better than harlots.’

She looked puzzled so I rephrased my words. ‘They know all the tricks. Some varieties can mimic the smell of a female wasp on heat. Even produce a petal so hairy, it feels like an insect. So, a male wasp mistakes the plant for a partner and attempts to have intercourse.’

I watched her tongue brush her top lip. Wondered if she was shocked.

‘When this occurs, the orchid produces a load of pollen and dumps it onto its lover's head. Do you understand my meaning, Daisy?’

I expected girlish sniggers - a baffled look. She nodded. Stood closer. I had my student’s absolute attention.

‘The insect becomes frustrated. It goes away and seeks out another orchid,’ I said. ‘That one pounces on the pollen and conception is complete. Good news for the orchid. Hard luck for Mister Wasp.’

‘Serves him right for being greedy, if you asks me - taking advantage of a girl.’ Her eyes dared me.

Our gaze locked, we stood breathing in the mix of moist soil and heady, white jasmine. But something other than floral perfume rippled the air. Inevitability pulsed between us, almost tangible in its intensity.

Adelaide would, I believe, have revelled in today’s more broadminded attitude towards people who don’t fit into neat little boxes. Adelaide is turned on by erotic paintings. She’s not that much of a reader but boy can she day dream! She is, to quote one of my other characters, ripe for plucking and it wouldn’t have mattered whether her first lover was male or female. She’s an incredibly vulnerable young woman, with a story we can all empathise with. It’s been a privilege to introduce her to you.

Leap Year? Why?

April, June, and November,
All the rest have thirty one,
Except February alone,
Which hath twenty eight days clear,
And twenty-nine in each leap year.

Why do we need Leap Years?

Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun.
It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun.

However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn't add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days!
How do we calculate Leap Years?

In the Gregorian calendar 3 criteria must be met to be a leap year:
The year is evenly divisible by 4;
If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless;
The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

This means that 2000 and 2400 are leap years, while 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years.

The year 2000 was somewhat special as it was the first instance when the third criterion was used in most parts of the world since the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar.
Who invented Leap Years?

Julius Caesar introduced Leap Years in the Roman empire over 2000 years ago, but the Julian calendar had only one rule: any year evenly divisible by 4 would be a leap year. This lead to way too many leap years, but didn't get corrected until the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar more than 1500 years later.

Leap Year Traditions.

Women can propose to men

According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every 4 years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. During the middle ages there were laws governing this tradition.

In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

Bad luck

In Scotland, it used to be considered unlucky for someone to be born on Leap Day, just like Friday 13th is considered an unlucky day by many. In Greece it’s said to be unlucky for couples to marry during a Leap Year, and especially on Leap Day.

Leap Day is also St Oswald’s Day, named after an archbishop of York who died on February 29, 992. The memorial is celebrated on February 29 during Leap Years and on February 28 during common years.

People born on February 29 are all invited to join The Honor society of Leap Year Day Babies.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are record holders both of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29 and of the number of children born on February 29 in the same family.

You write both m/m and m/f romance, You obviously don't just write in one genre is there one that you prefer over another and why?

I think Paranormal is probably my favorite, but I do enjoy variety. I think I'd hate to be limited to just one. Paranormal just allows you greater leeway in terms of what you imagine. I guess the same could be said for anything in the fantasy realm--steampunk, sci-fi, etc. I do like straight contemporaries too, but...I guess I just like my imaginary worlds.

Is one genre funnier or easier to write then the other and why?

I think my contemporary stories have been some of the funnier, less angsty stories. While I definitely have found some stories have been easier to write than others, that doesn't seem to be confined to a particular genre. For instance, In the Dark and Waiting for the Big One were two of the easiest books I've ever written--and they have almost nothing in common with each other.

As a writer you I'm sure you have to do lots of research. What is the wildest and craziest thing you have found while researching ;) ?

Oh, yeah. research is fascinating. One of the strangest stories I've come across was something I just found recently. I can't even remember what I started out researching--something to do with weird blood conditions, probably. I'm always looking for stuff like that in order to make the vampires more interesting.
Anyway, I stumbled across a story about this family in Kentucky who had blue skin. I'm so going to use that at some point! I'm thinking perhaps an erotic paranormal, maybe something combining the Kama Sutra with Hindu mythology overtones, since Krishna is always depicted as being blue...perhaps a dream/fantasy/I don't know what all else yet. lol!

I know that I have my favorite characters in books I read, do you have favorites in book you write?

Well, sure. I think you can't help showing some favoritism. I really do love them all, however, and--generally speaking--whichever book I'm currently working on, those tend to be my favorite at the time. But, having said that, yeah, Conrad and Damian are definitely up there. lol--I'm sure you're surprised to hear that, huh?

Speaking of favorites I am totally in love with Damian... and Conrad too - I just can't choose. I think it's there complex relationship that has drawn me in so tight. I'm very curious what you have up your sleeve for the next book in this series. Do you think think you could give us a little taste of what next? I'm dying to know.

Ah, the next book. Yes. Whoever said 'third time's the charm' couldn't have had this book in mind when he or she said it. The third book got so long, it's now the third and fourth book...or it will be, as soon as I figure out how and where to split it.

As you know, all the books in this series go back and forth in time between present day (okay, by present I mean 2009/2010 at this point) and some point in the past that relates to what's happening 'now'. Basically, the next book(s) in the series was supposed to be dealing with the twins' childhood. So roughly, a thirty year period spanning the years between 1970 and 2000. I'm having a lot of fun with that part...maybe too much fun. lol! It's a much longer time frame than I covered in either of the first two books. Of course, the rest of the books in the series will cover even greater time periods. Hopefully I won't have to split ALL of them as well. Gulp.

There are a couple of new characters who show up in the next installment. One of them, Paul, was a love interest of Damian's. Conrad was not too happy about this, by the way. He feels--quite rightly--that this is 'his' series.

Here's a little peek. It's unedited--I should mention that! So it could definitely change. This scene takes place on New Year's Eve 1981. The twins are about eleven and Conrad and Damian have been pretending to be father and son to explain their relationship to the twins and each other. Damian has convinced Conrad to throw a party. He's told him that it was to help the twins learn to socialize, but really it was because he wanted some sort of neutral ground in which to introduce Paul to his family. Conrad is upset because he's jealous. Paul is upset because he's not buying the whole father-and-son story...

“Happy New Year, Mr. Quintano,” Lillian added as her husband dragged her away. “It was lovely speaking with you.”

Conrad nodded vacantly at them, taking care to keep his smile plastered to his face for fear of what his expression might otherwise reveal. His eyes continued to track Damian’s progress as he made his way around the room, pausing, from time to time to chat with various guests.

His young man never moved from Damian’s side. Occasionally, he even placed a hand on Damian’s shoulder, although whether he was offering comfort, or seeking the same, Conrad couldn’t decide and really didn’t care. What concerned him more—far more in fact—was Damian’s reaction. Did Damian even notice the way he was leaning, ever so subtly, into the boy’s touch? That soft smile that lingered on his lips whenever his glance strayed to his friend’s face, was Damian even conscious of it? He looked smitten. They both did. And the beast that made its home in Conrad was enraged by it.

Mine, the beast howled loudly. All mine. Always mine. It was an old promise, one Damian had made centuries earlier, and Conrad was certain he’d meant it at the time. Was it anyone’s fault, other than Conrad’s own, if Damian no longer felt that way now?

At last, Damian stopped to introduce his new friend to the twins. The love and pride he felt for them was clear on his face. The boy shook hands with them both. Julie dimpled up at him cheerily, which was no surprise, but even Marc, usually the more cautious, smiled with friendly curiosity.
And then, at last, they were heading in Conrad’s direction. Conrad gave serious thought to the idea of seducing the boy, charming him away from Damian just to teach them a lesson, to show them both what they were up against. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d done such a thing, and why should he not? Rank did have its privileges, after all. But, on the other hand, what good did he think he would come of it? Damian already knew, and all-too-well, the depths to which Conrad could occasionally sink. Conrad certainly didn’t need to give him any more reasons to despise him.

“Good evening, Papa.” The breezy, confident tone of Damian’s voice was marred by the thinnest thread of worry. Otherwise he hid his feelings well, far better than Conrad who only just barely managed to conceal a grimace. Papa. The name by which they’d agreed Damian should address Conrad in public. Never had it struck so sour a note. “Will you allow me to introduce my friend Paul to you?”

Would he allow it? An interesting question. And how clever of Damian to make it seem as though Conrad actually had any choice in the matter.

Still annoyed, Conrad allowed his gaze to lock with Damian’s and time lost its meaning. The look in Damian’s eyes was one Conrad had seen countless times before. There was something Damian wanted tonight, something he wanted very badly and only Conrad could give it to him. Oh, if only it were the same thing that Conrad wanted—just as badly—from Damian. It wasn’t however, and Conrad knew it.

“Of course you may.” Smiling determinedly, Conrad turned his gaze to the other man, only to find his eyes had narrowed suspiciously. Conrad extended his hand all the same. “Paul, is it?” he murmured in dangerous tones, practically daring the boy not to take his hand. “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

The young man clenched his jaw and said nothing.

“Paul,” Damian prodded softly. The plaintive note in his voice nearly undid all of Conrad’s good intentions. Who was this boy that Damian—nearly as stiff-necked and proud as Conrad himself—should feel obliged to beg?

Paul shot Damian an angry look then reluctantly forced a smile. “Very pleased to meet you too,” he said his eyes still flashing a challenge as he shook Conrad’s hand, squeezing it with all-too-tight a grip.

Conrad sighed in annoyance. He sent an appealing glance in Damian’s direction, apologizing for what he was about to do, then he too tightened his grip, just enough to pull a gasp of pained surprise from Paul’s lips.

Damian cleared his throat and frowned pointedly at Conrad, but Conrad had already released Paul’s hand. “So, tell me, Paul,” he said, smiling at them both. “How did you and my son meet?”

“Son. Right.” Paul snorted quietly. “Well, actually, if you must know, we first met—”

“At a bar here in town,” Damian finished quickly. “Several months ago. You know how we’ve discussed bringing in another couple of tutors for the twins? After talking to Paul, I thought he might be just what we were looking for.”

“Did you?” Conrad hadn’t missed the angry look that passed between the two men. He wondered what he wasn’t being told this time. Before he had a chance to pursue it, or Damian to respond, a chant broke out in the room around them.

“Ten…nine…eight…”

The countdown to the New Year had begun. Conrad’s lip curled into a rueful smile as he once again met Damian’s eyes. In seasons now long since passed, they might have heralded the New Year’s arrival with a kiss. Or even, perhaps, with a more intimate display of their mutual devotion.

“Seven…six…five…”

Now, of course, their masquerade as father and son precluded any sort of intimacy in public and the sins that lay between them kept them apart the rest of the time, as well. But it didn’t always have to be that way, did it?

“Four…three…two…”

Someday, perhaps, there would come a time when all these petty constraints would be lifted and the two of them might ring in the New Year as they once had done. Someday. Perhaps.

“Happy New Year!”

The entire room erupted in a cheer and Paul, who was under no constraints whatsoever, turned suddenly toward Damian. He clasped Damian’s head between his hands and kissed him—hard and fast and far too intimately for two men who were mere acquaintances. If Conrad had still retained any doubts, that kiss would have resolved them. The two were lovers, but he already knew that. What he didn’t know, and what he needed to know, badly, was how deeply entrenched Damian’s heart had become.

Damian grasped Paul by the shoulders and pushed him away, breaking the kiss. His face was white with shock, his eyes wide with fear, but, for once, Paul seemed not to notice Damian’s distress. Instead, he turned to Conrad with an insufferably smug smile on his face. “And a very Happy New Year to you, too.”

Conrad could feel his temper boiling rapidly away. There were only two things keeping him from exploding in rage, the look in Damian’s eyes and what was left of his common sense. He could certainly kill Paul. In fact, at the moment, he’d have liked nothing more. But to do so now, to reveal his true nature here, in this room full of people, would mean a death sentence for the twins and himself and for Damian as well. No amount of insolence was worth that.

With his self-control stretched taut, Conrad once again appealed wordlessly to Damian. The message in his gaze was clear, or so Conrad hoped. Get him away from me. Now. Or else.

“Come, Paul.” Damian’s hand closed on the other man’s arm. Let’s see who else we might introduce you to.”

So now that you have intrigued us do you have anything new coming out?

Well, the print version of Old Sins, Long Shadows will be available in April. I think you can pre-order it at Amazon now, in fact. Other than that...I have several things in the pipeline, but sadly I have no firm dates at this point.

Weekend Fun

I hadn't had much planned for this weekend until a friend called and asked if I'd be interested in going to a concert, a Heavy Metal concert. Yes I do enjoy Heavy Metal music and have been to well over 100 concerts but I had never heard of this band before so I went on youtube (one of the greatest places on the net!)
What I found there I actually really liked so I said yes to the concert and man am I happy I did, it was great! I got to visit with friends, got to see a fantastic concert, and I found a new band - Iced Earth.

This is my first Felicity Heaton book and I want more!! She had me from the first line -

"There was one rule his kind honoured above all others: an owned human must never be touched by a vampire other than their master."

Book one in her Vampire Erotic Theatre series starts off with the story of Javier and Lilah. Javier knows it's his life if he gives into his craving for Lilah, she is an owned human but that has not curbed his desire for her, neither has his time away from Vampirerotique it has only intensified it.

With the theatre full of lust, desire, and the temptation from the erotic plays going on around them there was no way they could stay away from each other. Even with the fear of death and pain looming over them they both fell victim to their primal urges for each other.

I will definitely be picking up more of Felicity Heaton's after reading this, her writing is so smooth and flows right off the page/e-reader. So if you are looking for a new erotic vampire series that is fast paced, well written, and full of smutty goodness this is a great read to pick up!

With a sigh she headed over to the counter to order a drink, she didn’t see anyone that could fit that description. Licking her lips she smiled at the attendant and placed her order. Handing over her cash, she smiled toward the woman after leaving her name. Looking down as she turned to shove her change back in her wallet, she slammed into what felt like a brick wall.

Slightly jarred, and blinking rapidly to get back her vision that appeared to be compromised after running into something she had been under the impression wasn’t there before. As the stars started to fade, and a mumbled curse escaped her, she realized that she wasn’t just staring at a very large torso, but she had run smack into a man. Her throat contracted, the saliva seemed to get stuck half way down and she was holding her breath. Slowly, her gaze traveled up till she was looking into the eyes of the most handsome man she had ever seen. Her mouth opened and shut, an apology lost somewhere in the shock that had seemed to envelop her being.

The man arched a brow, an amused smirk on his lips as she leaned down. He seemed to be nuzzling her cheek, his lips caressed her ear, a low rumbled growl. Dawn found herself pressing in against the man, his body heat like a warm blanket that soothed her tattered nerves.

“Breath, Dawn, Lilly is over in the far corner waiting for you.” He took a step back and winked.

He reached around her and grabbed her coffee drink that had been waiting at the counter. She didn’t even hear the woman call her name. Watching the handsome beast of a man she smiled and giggled awkwardly at him.

“Sorry, I—“

“No need to apologize. Just head on over, Lilly has to meet with another pack Alpha before the day is out.”

Resting his hand on her lower back, he gently nudged her in the direction of the Lilly Cummings. When her gaze found the woman in the corner table she felt like she was being consumed by unearthly beauty.

God, to be a werewolf….

The woman was stunning. Her eyes were the color of cinnamon, her skin was sun kissed and it covered a body that was built for sinning, her long hair spilled over her shoulders. She was simply dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a white blouse, the red bra she wore under it was in view. Dawn cleared her throat and walked on knees that had turned to jelly, toward the woman. Lilly stood up as she approached.

“It is wonderful to meet you, Dawn.” She reached out a hand and took Dawn’s shivering limb in her hand.

Lilly leaned in close, mimicking the movement that the man before her had done, almost nuzzling her neck.

Did they both just sniff me?

Shaking off the absurd thought she smiled back.

“Thank you for meeting with me.” She gestured towards the man, who was now leaning against the wall next to them.

Lilly looked up at him.

“Oh! Sorry, that was rude. This is Wallace Kirk, the hired muscle.” A growl sounded and Dawn’s heart started to race and she swore she was getting aroused by the very idea of him in such close proximity.

Lilly laughed and turned her attention back to Dawn.

“Readers have questions?” Lilly leaned an elbow on the table and rested her chin in her palm.

Dawn, flustered, pulled out her note pad and pen and set it on the table.

“Yes, they do, just a few things. I was curious myself.”

“Well, let us get started then.” Lilly gave her a warm smile and it eased her nerves.

“Yes, right, ok.” She shifted on the chair, her own jeans were comfortable and well worn, her sweater was warm and cozy and she was starting to ease considering she had two of the most deadly creatures on either side of her.

“Lilly. Did you have an idea growing up that you had a wolf growing inside you?”

Licking her lips, Lilly leaned back, her hand came up, and she brushed her thumb over her bottom lip.

“That is a good question, because when I think back on it now, I would have to say yes. However, at that time, the things I felt, the impulse to be outside, to stay up late. To generally hand myself over to animal instincts during the full moon growing up, I had no clue what that was. I just assumed I was an odd bird, different. And I spent a lot of time trying to be as normal as possible. So yes and no.”

Dawn finished scrawling the answer down and cleared her throat before her next answer.

“The second mark, the one that is implied about in multiple books, the one on your breast.” Dawn blushed, and she swore it reached to toes. “Do you remember that mark, now, after you became your wolf.”

Lilly smiled at Dawn and looked down at her own drink, took a sip and then met her gaze.

“I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a dream, a dream I always knew had happened. I was supposed to suppress everything after that day, yet that dream stuck with me. It would tease me as a woman. It would let me know that I was being watched, protected, and that I was something more, something bigger than I could have ever dreamed.”

Dawn couldn’t help but sigh. To have that kind of connection and link, it was simply magic. She rubbed her right palm on her pants leg and looked down at her other questions. She’d got five today so she skimmed through them and picked out her next one. Her eyes moved over to Wallace and he just stared back. His expression was cold, frozen. Turning her attention back to Lilly she half whispered the next question.

“Were you in love with Wallace?”

A warning growl rumbled through the whole bistro. No one seemed to notice but Dawn and Lilly. Dawn shivered and thought about retracting the question. Lilly just looked amused and batted her lashes at Wallace before answering.

“Honestly, yes. He was my best friend, my confidant, and everything for so long. I could trust no one like I trusted Wallace. He was mine, for the years I had him, he was the love of my life.” Lilly’s gaze swept over to Wallace and there was a lingering silence that stretched. They just looked at each other, emotions and lost moments reflected in their gaze. They both said so much, without saying nothing at all.

Lilly blushed and looked down. Dawn couldn’t believe that of all people Wallace was the one that made this woman almost appear vulnerable.

“Well, yes, ok, um—“ Lilly’s attention focused again as she looked at Dawn, the next question coming out quickly.

“Is it hard to be away from Bryn during the Yearning.”

“I think that question answers itself.” Lilly took a sip and continued. “The Yearning is something I can’t explain off. No creature can know what I experience unless they are like me. It is simply the most painful experience. My body is screaming to breed, mother nature is taking it into her own hands and wielding my body to her command. She wants our race to flourish. So, she creates pain and need, two things that the animal in me can neither refuse nor deny in that moment. With Bryn gone it simply takes a more emotional toll on me. But I need the release or I will suffer. To not have Bryn ease the release is like a thousand knifes stabbing me in the heart.” She looked down, guilty and sadness marring her pretty face. “But the animal gets what that animal wants.” Shame was in that sentence and Dawn, feeling bad for the woman moved on.

“You might get a bad rep from some people. Your mate and yet you slept with others in the pack to ease the yearning. Are you proud of your choices?”

Lilly reflected on this a moment, her lips pressed together as she allowed a single finger to glide over the open rim of her coffee cup.

“I don’t think it is a matter of being proud of my choice or not. I am not a human. My choices are cut and dry when the beast needs something. On top of that, I am a woman, and my choices are never easy. For the pack, for me, I have to take the steps to keep everyone safe. I didn’t fuck any beta willy nilly. Once Wallace was aware of the situation he took control. It was something that there was no out clause. It was happening, and we either made rational choices or irrational, like my choice with Ethan.” She spat out the name like it was a disgusting piece of meat.

Dawn nodded in somewhat understanding. She looked at her watch and started to stand.

“Thank you so much for meeting with my Lilly, I think readers will like hearing about what you have to say. And maybe understand you a little better.”

Lilly took her hand and smiled, giving it a tight squeeze. “We can hope right?” She released the woman’s hand and took her seat again.

“Wallace will see you to your car. We have many enemies Dawn, we will make sure you are safely to your car.”

Dawn gulped and nodded as Wallace came to tower over her again. The heat that radiated off his body was arousing all on its own, without the chiseled features, huge chest, broad shoulders, and deep, penetrating eyes. Wallace pushed her forward with a hand at the small of her back. Walking her out of the bistro and to her car they were silent. As she got to her car door, she turned and Wallace pressed his body against hers. Pinning her against her car, she gave off a little squeak and sucked in a breath. Wallace leaned in till he was nuzzling her again, his hot breath spilled over her neck and shoulder. She felt his lips before she felt a slight nip at her flesh. Letting off a moan, Dawn’s legs turned to putty when Wallace stepped back. With a wink and a cheeky grin he turned and walked away from her.

I’ve got an amazing Valentine’s Day book recommendation…Sweetest Seduction by KB Alan!

Get ready to fall in love with Keith and Val! This story had it all from start to finish; it was well-paced and chock full of realistic, intimate-naughty-sextastic scenes. I could especially relate to Val and her disciplined attitude about working from home as an accountant..I am every bit as regimented as her when it comes to starting the day with getting dressed to avoid the laziness of working in jammies and I can also relate to her insecurities, which made her a loveable heroine for me. I can’t leave Keith out of this…he’s a hero that is every bit as determined as my dear hubby, which makes me love him just as much, if not more than Val.

KB takes us on a seductive journey involving assumptions that became a wedge which kept Keith and Val from coming together. Keith knows they are perfect for each other and has decided to prove this to her on what started out for her as a normal, date-less Valentine’s Day. His ballsy, take-charge, Val-napping is just what she needed to overcome the battle with her greatest enemy…her own mind with its twisted rationalization as to why he could never be as satisfied by her as he could by the beautiful models he photographs regularly. He pulls no punches when it comes to showing her that he’s a hopeless romantic with a huge heart that he wants to share with no one else but her.

The page-turning scenes kept me engrossed from start to finish. Since I’m a food junkie, my favorite scene was the ordering of the Double-Double, animal style—oh yeah baby—just the way I like my…men—umm—In-N-Out…ah hell!

So, to all you beautiful ladies out there, regardless of whether you have a date planned for V-Day or not this is a “must read” recommendation from me to you. If spending the special day showering yourself with all the love you deserve or having all that love showered on you…Keith and Val’s story will either fulfill wickedly romantic fantasies or provide some extra spice for your night! 1. If you could choose one or more of your heroes to spend your Valentine with who would it be? why?

That is a tough question! But, I think I would have to answer Keith, from Sweetest Seduction. The paranormal abilities of Connul (Bound by Sunlight) and Zach (Alpha Turned) are very tempting, and the uber-Alpha, in control Caleb (Perfect Formation) makes my heart beat triple fast. But Keith is an every-day hero, who realizes that for Val, he has to up his game and come up with the perfect date for her, to convince her that they can make a go of it as a couple. Of course, that’s not to say that I’d turn down a date with Caleb and Richard!!

2. What's the craziest and/or wildest thing you've ever done on a date?

(oops, you may recognize this as the inspiration for a scene in one of my books 0_0)

In high school, on a double date with my sister and her boyfriend, we jumped the gate at an apartment complex to sit in the hot tub in our underwear at midnight. Not very crazy, I know, but that’s because I’m a sweet, innocent little thing. I’m surprised you didn’t realize that, Dawn, since you’ve met me!! (Also, rumors of my giving Lola a lap dance in Vegas are much exaggerated *cough, cough*)

And I'm sure there are no photos to prove it either *snicker*

Lola- I do remember my wallet being a little light, but that's all I'm saying ;)

One of Keith’s fingers found her jeans-covered leg and traced along the side seam from her waist to her knee. His gaze flicked down and hers did as well so they both watched as the finger trailed up over her kneecap until it was even with the center of her leg before making the return journey.
