Lisa Renee Jones ~

Lisa Renee Jones

Today we have Lisa Renee Jones with us talking about her newest release IF I WERE YOU (one of my favorite books this year) and how music influences her, her characters, and her writing. You can always find out more about Lisa on her Twitter, Facebook, and her blog.

Thanks so much for inviting me to talk about IF I WERE YOU. With all books I find music really helps me write and if people saw the crazy list of varied music they’d think the same person didn’t own the list. Some characters are country and sentimental stuff. Others are pop and fun. I do, after all, write across genres and music helps me shift from the light, fun Blaze novels I write to the dark and gritty novels I write like IF I WERE YOU.

The music for IF I WERE YOU was such an important part of the story. So much so that it haunted me as much as the characters as I was writing. I WAS Sara in the story and even now, after writing another story, I find it hard to let go of her. I know what comes next and I am hungry to share it with the world.

For IF I WERE YOU, I gravitated towards Lifehouse music in a big, big way. There is a message to much of their music that not only screamed Sara to me but Chris. They sing about damaged people trying to heal and in truth, aren’t we all damaged and healing? Isn’t that part of life? The growth and the discovery? I hope this novel reaches deep and talks to people on that kind of level as it did to me.

On the 24th I’m announcing several large contest and one of them will be to guess which scene certain songs go to. I’ll have some huge prizes! And if IF I WERE YOU breaks the top 100 at Amazon and Barnes and Noble I’ll be giving away a trip to Sonoma!

The video for the book has one of the songs in it

Today-- if you comment -- I’ll draw one winner to get a $10 gift card to Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Also -- Want to win $75? I draw every week on Saturday through August 24th. Every time IF I WERE YOU hits 100 new bookshelves I draw for $75. If it hits 500 new shelves that week I draw for $75 5 times. You can win more than once.

The details are here:

More About IF I WERE YOU

How it began….

One day I was a high school teacher on summer break, leading a relatively uneventful but happy life. Or so I told myself. Later, I’d question that, as I would question pretty much everything I knew about me, my relationships, and my desires. It all began when my neighbor thrust a key to a storage unit at me. She’d bought it to make extra money after watching some storage auction show. Now she was on her way to the airport to elope with a man she barely knew, and she needed me to clear out the unit before the lease expires.

Soon, I was standing inside a small room that held the intimate details of another woman’s life, feeling uncomfortable , as if I was invading her privacy. Why had she let these items so neatly packed, possessions that she clearly cared about deeply, be lost at an auction? Driven to find out by some unnamed force, I began to dig, to discover this woman’s life, and yes, read her journals—-dark, erotic journals that I had no business reading. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I read on obsessively, living out fantasies through her words that I’d never dare experience on my own, compelled by the three men in her life, none of whom had names. I read onward until the last terrifying dark entry left me certain that something had happened to this woman. I had to find her and be sure she was okay.

Before long, I was taking her job for the summer at the art gallery, living her life, and she was nowhere to be found. I was becoming someone I didn’t know. I was becoming her…

The dark, passion it becomes…

Now, I am working at a prestigious gallery, where I have always dreamed of being, and I’ve been delivered to the doorstep of several men, all of which I envision as one I’ve read about in the journal. But there is one man that will call to me, that will awaken me in ways I never believed possible. That man is the ruggedly sexy artist, Chris Merit, who wants to paint me. He is rich and famous, and dark in ways I shouldn’t find intriguing, but I do. I so do. I don’t understand why his dark side appeals to me, but the attraction between us is rich with velvety promises of satisfaction. Chris is dark, and so are his desires, but I cannot turn away. He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.

All I know for certain is that he knows me like I don’t even know me, and he says I know him. Still, I keep asking myself — do I know him? Did he know her, the journal writer, and where is she? And why doesn’t it seem to matter anymore? There is just him and me, and the burn for more

  4. Love the blurb for If I Were You! That trailer goes perfect with the idea of the book in my opinion. I am intrigued to see what music Lisa sees going with each story. :)
I don't usually associate songs with books, but definitely with TV shows and movies. I think when I see the association, I will have those songs playing in my head while reading that particular book. I am currently reading Wicked Werewolf Passion and oh man do I love those hot, sexy, alpha wolves! ;)
Thank you for sharing and for the giveaway.

  14. This is on of my favorite books too. Music can definitely make a difference. I love listening to music when I'm reading, but if the right song isn't playing I have a hard time concentrating. I can't wait to find out what other songs you listened to while writing this story.
