Today we have Mrs. Missive with us and she will be reviewing Kallypso Masters first book, Master At Arms in her Rescue Me series.
Masters at Arms (Rescue Me)
Blurb:
Masters at Arms begins the journey of three men, each on a quest for honor, acceptance, and to ease his unspoken pain. Their paths cross at one of the darkest points in their lives. As they try to come to terms with the aftermath--forging an unbreakable bond--will they ever truly become masters of their own fates? Or would fate become masters of them? (Book One in the Rescue Me series about the men who own the Masters at Arms BDSM Club.) AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is an introduction to the series, but does NOT have the Happily Ever After endings that will come in the next three romance novels in the series. Being the back-story that usually is not told in "real time," there are some intense themes in the book, including death of a spouse, incest, torture, a battle scene, and amputation.
Review:
This book is basically a giant back story that leads into her series. Kallypso Masters pops us into the lives of three men at the exact moment in their lives that they are hitting rock bottom. The strength that comes through in these guys just surviving is amazing, and the author tore at my heart strings with razor blades in these stories. The men meet in the Marines, but first we find out how they all get there.
Adam is headed back into the military, because it seems to be the one thing he has left after his wife is taken from him by cancer. Adam's story is the one that I fell absolutely in love with. I did not want to stop reading. He is truly lost, but can't help saving a teenage runaway from some thugs. It's obvious Kayla, the aspiring singer, idolizes Adam for her rescue, but I love the fact that they end up saving each other.
Damian is working as a busboy when he sees Savannah eating dinner. He notices she's beautiful, but can't see anything behind that. As readers the author shows us the horrible existence Savi has endured. This is one of those stories that may trigger a bit in abuse victims so heads up. Damian finds Savi in an abusive scene that she was sold into by her own father. That's right, her DAD! Ick. Damian and Savi connect with each other on a very intimate level, but both part ways without either revealing their base truth.
Finally we meet Master Marco. Adam discusses being in a D/s relationship with his wife, but Marco has a job at his family's resort where he offers his services to some select guests. Marco is living in his brother's shadow and under his family's microscope, and decides to run to the Navy to get away.
Just a couple of sex scenes in this book, but I was captivated by both the writing and the story. One of the sex scenes wasn't even sexy, but both showed us so much about the characters. This is how a sex scene should be used in a story folks. We got closer to our characters because they weren't hiding anything from us, even if they were hiding from everybody else. I usually don't list a whole lot of facts in reviews, but there was SO much information that we get about our guys here, that to introduce them, you have to have some of their story. We are taken through their horrible experience in the Marines, and into the fetish club that develops after. We get a glimpse of Adam's upcoming story, but our HEAs will have to come in other books. I cannot wait to read them! This was the first I have read of this author, and I will definitely read more. 5 stars. All the way.
This prequel was really good and led me to a series I absolutely love! I've been anticipating the next book, Nobody's Perfect, for so long and can't believe it will finally be released at the end of the week :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mrs. Missive! So glad you loved the book! Just an update on the release of book 4--it's looking like Sunday, Sept. 16. This is the continuation of Savi and Damian's story and hits very close to home, so it has been the most difficult book I've ever written (taken 9 months to write and edit, rather than the typical 2-3 months).
ReplyDeleteMasters at Arms is free and will stay so (if I have anything to say about it). And the books in the series MUST be read in order. Even if you want more of Adam, if you skip to the third book (his), you'll miss a lot of the continuing story showing how Karla and Adam's relationship develops (which is in Nobody's Angel). These characters are a family and very interconnected, so they can't be contained inside one book.
Now back to edits so I can get Nobody's Perfect cleaned up for release day. But please join the party and giveaways at my blog starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 14--lots of great authors will guest blog and have giveaways, one every hour.
Thanks again for the review!
