CJ Roberts ~ Captive In The Dark ~ Review

Be warned
this book will not only take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions but will leave you on a cliff hanging on for the next words.

Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1)

BUY IT: Amazon

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence

Review ~

I got this book as a lend from a friend who was having trouble getting through it due to the severely disturbing content (rape, molestation, kidnapping, torturous non-consent games both with the body and mind, underage and barely legal, violence, and killing). When I read books like this I seem to detach from the real world and enjoy the book for what it is, a “DARK EROTIC” story with BDSM elements and other dubious content.

I have read several other authors who write Dark Erotica, BDSM, and other dubious matter and have to say that CJ Roberts has made a quick climb up my list with her debut book Captive in the Dark. Her impactful writing grabs hold of you on several levels.

Like I’ve said, I read lots of books like this but some can be full of just sex, torture, sex, harsh language, sex, humiliation, and more sex with little story. I am so happy to say that is not the case in this story!! When I looked this book up I was drawn in by the cover and reviews immediately, even though the content is so “dark” and afflicting it received amazing reviews. So I knew I had to read this.

Thank you so much to my friend (*you know who you are*) for telling me about this book! Xoxo
Caleb is a warped soul who has been put through HELL and survived…but just barely. His only escape has been the thought of taking down the man who caused all his pain and suffering. Sadly there is only one way to get his revenge and it involves becoming his most feared nightmare…the thing that stalks him in both sleeping and waking dreams.

Olivia, a quiet girl who has always tried to go “unnoticed” falls into the sites of Caleb and he instantly knows “she is the one.” He must have her. He sees in her what she has hidden from herself and knows that she will be the perfect tool for his revenge.

Once Caleb has Livvie for his own he sets out to “break” her. She will learn to embrace her inner submissive and crave it at his hands—this he is sure of.

His voice, thinly coated with civility, filled my head, “I’d watch what you say my pet. There is a world of difference between me and him. One that I think you’ll learn to appreciate, despite yourself. But make no mistake; I am still capable of things you can’t imagine. Provoke me and I’ll show you.”
A short burst of laughter escaped his lips as he recalled the look on her face when he told her to call him Master. Her eyes had said it all in that moment. He was going to have to break her down to her foundation before he’d have any chance of building her back up.

There is a twisted sense of romance going on throughout this whole story. Olivia learns to rely on, if not seek out, Caleb’s attention and protection while Caleb also yearns for his “kitten,” knowing he should not want this because it can never be—she is a means to an end—an end that he needs to make amends with.

He made me cry and scream and shake with fear and nearly a split second later he could make me almost believe he wasn’t responsible for any of it. He could hold me and make me feel safe.

Both these characters know that it’s better if they didn’t want or crave what they do but they can’t seem to help themselves. This bitter story is one that has dominance, passion (for many things dark and emotional), and a twisted sense of love. Even though you want to hate Caleb for what he does you wind up feeling for him. I was instantly drawn to him–strength, dominance and sensitivity all in one jacked up man.
Olivia (Livvie)—she is like the girl next door you only see going to and from school and never talks to anyone. The quiet kid in the corner, that you never look at twice—silent, and broken, with the rebellious streak.

SO WHAT DID I THINK?

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT!! I could go on and on about this book and let me tell you I have! I have screamed my love for this book to everyone I know, even those who don’t read this genre. Like I said, CJ Roberts is now on my Favorites shelf and I have even re-read this book and highlighted it to pieces – she has an amazing voice and uses profound wording.  Push your reading boundaries and give it a try ‘cause I am so Happy I did. Book two, Seduced in the Dark, just came out and I will be reading it this weekend to read my heart’s fill.
